What is Art?

I gave up trying to figure out art history a long time ago. I've since come to realize that art is anything. You can stab a rock into the ground and call it art if you want, since it did require sentinent thought (supposedly) to create it. So what makes GOOD art? Well, it has to do nothing more than stand out from the crowd. No artsy poses, no controversy, and no big, furry breasts required. Just be unique, different, and interesting, regardless of rendering talent. There seems to be a lack of such art these days in the furry community, and many link pages are flooded with people who can draw well, barring any sense of originality.

Since I tend to score artists in terms of creativity and uniqueness, rather than just drawing ability, some of the following artists typically don't get a lot of publicity from other link pages. A shame, becuase I really enjoy all of them, and when you start look beyond just visual appeal, I think you will, too. That doesn't mean they all suck at drawing (hardly!), it means the intrigue is usually not just how it looks. So stop complaining about cartoonish eyes, sketchiness, and the lack of background detail, and start appreciating -- and demanding -- better subject matter, mood, and emotion. Relax, enjoy, and have fun! These are the people who matter. Please support them!

Artists I Like
Red stars indicate potentially adult links - Shift-Click on a link if you use Internet Explorer!

(Tirrel, aka Cerberus) -- I'm not a big (haha) fan of macrofurry art, but this guy is just wicked funny.

Erin Middendorf (Dingbat) -- Ever wanted art that's fun and relaxing at the same time? Look no further. Erin also has the magic ability to get 500,000 different colors from just one pencil.

Natalie Robles (Poofy-Wolf) -- Good God, this girl is... weird... and friggin' hilarious! There are few things better than a goth making fun of goths. :)
Her website died, so the link is to the VCL. She also has a LiveJournal.

(Furrymaster) -- Words fail to explain why I like this guy. I just do. :)

Stina Lövkvist (Spocha) -- Very, very nicely done stuff! Somehow, Spocha manages to draw her characters ultra-fuzzy, but without a hair out of place. Brilliant color and beautiful flow dominates all her work.
The thumbnail links to her VCL gallery, as her excellent website seems to be down. If it comes back soon, you'll find it here.

***   (Mathias Blackwolf) -- He reminds me so much of myself when I got into furry stuff, except he's actually good with CG color. He hasn't updated in a while, but there's still more than enough stuff to go around. Warning: Some of his stuff is VERY naughty.

Kelly Peters (Sabine) -- The Oekaki Demon! Versatility is her middle name. From wall murals to T-shirts to CG scribbles, she does it all. Sadly, she lost her web site, but there's still plenty to see at everyone's favorite furry archive.

***   (Seraph) -- One of the most entertaining cynics I've seen, and a major comic force on several Oekaki boards. Fine pen details and misanthropic weirdom are a good mix. Most of her stuff is on... you guessed it, the VCL!

***   Alicia Boros (Guyver47) -- Super smooth, super tight, and super shiny! What else do you need?
Well, if you need a lot, and the DeviantArt link is slow again, she has an even bigger archive on the VCL. ;)

***   Kim Kirkdorfer (Bloodhound) -- She's a prolific penciling pug! Tons of very naturalistic stuff, or at least as natural as a walkin', talkin' dog can be. Just in case you aren't swamped with thumbnails as it is, she has another *HUGE* archive on... dun dun daah... The VCL!

***   Alex Cockburn (Ookami Kemono) -- Probably the only person on the planet who draws angst I can really stand... or, dare I say it... enjoy?

Leigh Anna Frostad (Leighanna) -- The OTHER Oekaki Demon! Leighanna (or Leigh Anna, take your pick), goes through great lengths to make her pics as sickeningly cute as possible. Then she rips out the knives.

***   (Kitsune25) -- Smooth pencilwork, button noses, and *BIG* ears dominate her artwork. Oh yeah, and beefcake, too. It's been said that people who study psychology tend to make the best fetish art, and women tend to make the best porn. She doesn't prove those statements to be true, but she pushes them a bit more into the realm of fact. ;)

***   Helen Söderberg (Black Sunshine) -- Who knew a goth could be so funny? Maybe she's just a cynic in disguise. Anyway, her style is sketchy on paper and fantasticly smooth in Photoshop, and subjects bounce spazmasticly between black humor, psychadellia, and Red Bull. That should explain a lot. If it doesn't, click the damn link -- that's what it's there for!

Jen Seng (Spunky) -- Caffeine? No, she's just naturally hyper. If it wasn't for the bizarre stature of her characters, you wouldn't notice, as she displays amazing patience and talent when producing and coloring her works. Cell shaded goodness! The only time I've ever had my eyes burned out of my skull by blue! She's also rediculously funny and loves sheep. :)

***   David Hopkins -- The tormentor of the furry world, David is one of furrydom's blackest artists. But, he's not a goth or one of those really bizarre freaks you wouldn't want to be around -- he just draws that way. How can this guy make torture so weird, and lust so damn funny?! :)

Bill McEvoy (13:11) -- The name says it all: he's everyone's favorite weirdo! 13:11 is one of those strange people you'd expect to find at a skakeboard festival painting shirts. Uh, actually I think he is, but he also makes some of the trippiest, most detailed furry stuff I've ever seen.

(AceFox) -- How can this guy improve so much in ability so fast?! Ace is just that, a great artist who does wonderful facial detail with such a full but uncluttered look, and expressions to smile about. :D

***   Chris Goodwin -- Holy cow this guy is good. Highly versitile with many media, and he works very hard to resolve complex coposition problems and produce outstanding color balance. He's also a damn fine graphic designer, and does a lot of furry (and non furry) work with Adobe Illustratror. A true *ARTIST* in every sense of the word! That, and he's got TONS of stuff to see.

***   Brenda DiAntonis (Xian Jaguar) -- Astonishly smooth pencil work, and she makes some of the best furry pinup art out there without resorting to sleasy gimicks. She also does awesome work with detailing hair and the proper grain and texture of fur. Fabulous!
The VCL has her largest arvhive, but she has more links to her stuff on her homepage.

***   (Kamui) -- The awe STILL hasn't worn off, yet. Kamui works almost exclusively with a tablet, and produces some very nice digital paintings. Great anatomy and shading, and wonderful expressions!
He also has a page on Furnation.

Samuel Jerenius (Accipiter) -- Finally... practical furries! Sam renders minimalist compositions with superbly clean lines while still capturing the full texture of fur. Loaded with soft emotions and elegance.

Adam Wan -- Fabulous stuff! Brilliant linework, smooth cell shading, and interesting composition and borders brings out the best in his characters. Ooh, I've got such a crush on Kineta. :p...

***   Tremaine -- The only guy who does big breasts right! He's also amazingly prolific, so reserve a good amount of time to sift through his site.

***   Joshua Dee (SirFox) -- Unique twists and plenty of tentacles. His art is enough to bring out the bondage fetish in anyone.

***   Stephanie Kruz (TabbieWolf) -- Whee! Cute has never been so cool. I love the fact she experiments so much with different styles of design and technique, and always manages to make it look good to boot!   Try her place on the VCL for the most frequent updates.

***   D.M.C. (Fox) -- Spooge smoothies and copulatory locks for everyone! Yay!

Jon Jennings (Datonel) -- Super schnozzes! What a riot! He takes angst in stride and manages to find some of the most bizarre T-shirts. My kind of guy. :)
Try his place on the VCL for the most frequent updates.

  J. Axer -- He makes the best Sonic fan art out there! If you wanna see Tails with a chainsaw shouting, "It's ass whoopin' time! HAHAHA!!!", then here's the place to go. Simply awesome.

***   Eric Schwartz -- The guy who introduced me to furry stuff through his wonderful Amiga animations. Very cool style and wonderful coloring. Yes, the Amiga CAN do truecolor. :) My first idol -- a must see!

***   Joe Rosales (Animus) -- The inking God. Joe's art is superbly high in quality, and ranks as one of my favorite, if not the favorite artist. He's best known for his much loved teen adventures, "Wildlifers", though he draws anything and everything - so long as it's totally cool! Pay him a visit. Better yet, pay for his comics. Now that he's finally finished moving, updates to his site should be more frequent.

Andre Heinonen -- No, not the beer. Andre has a very scribbly style that just looks "right." Lots of lil' foxes and computer jokes, and some very peaceful poses.
Some of his older stuff is available on the VCL

Amy Pronovost -- Psychovixen extraodinare. Amara is just one of the coolest people out there, and is the queen of web content. Her art is consistenly full of color and quality, and is a real hoot for anyone just looking for a good ol' time! Lock up your cold cuts! GNAR!

Sara Howard -- Fat muzzles, droopy hair, and angst up the wazoo. Sara, like Mayra (below), has a knack for skewing any grunge subject into something really weird and funny. Manic depressive to the core, she's cute, disturbing, funny, bitter, and... uh... just plain weird. :p

***   Mayra Boyle (Huskie) -- Mayra really knows how to draw. Her style varies greatly, ranging from very silly anime to drop-dead serious photorealism. Balto fan extraordinare. Her older, more cartoonish style has given way to angsty grunge and coy cynicism in recent years, but she still gets top marks for quality.

Alan Mackey -- A talented artist and web designer who makes visually sharp and intriguing art. He gets brownie points for using GIFs and JPEGs correctly, and for having used the Amiga! Don't miss his excellent Photoshop tutorial (under the "Fun Stuff" menu), and do yourself a favor any buy his awesome music CD album, "Patchwerk", a nostalgia trip for any C64 user or SoundTracker MOD collector.

***   Justin Carpenter -- A master of the triangle-shaped eye with a large, bold iris, which has occasionally led me to a hypnotic stupor. :) Not a terribly prolific artist, but he has it where it counts, and most of his images are pleasantly sketchy with lots of soft color. Unforutunately, he has given up on furry art, and the VCL link and Page Rancourt at FurNation are pretty much all that's left of his presence on the web.

***   Sean O'Hare (Nauv) -- Likes variety, Ska, military stuff, and orgy pics. I love the zoot suits best, and he has quite a bit of info on Ska and related music tastes. Anyone for Yiff soda? Take a look on the VCL for his latest stuff and furbid auctions.

***   Sara Wheeler (Manawolf) -- Focuses on lifestyles and furry beauty, with just the right artistic touch. Very natural looking, very thought provoking, and sometimes very yiffy, too. :)
Try her Place on the VCL for the most frequent updates.

Heather Riesen (Auryanne) -- Also makes some nice stuff. Heather's art is similar to Mayra Boyle's old "Balto" style, except much, much cuter. She's very adept with watercolor and colored pencils, and makes lots of drawings of non-antro and slighty anthro dogs and wolves.

***   Micheal Higgs -- I love the way he draws his ladies - natural and on the chubby side. He also has something for macro and micro furries. You don't see that stuff every day, so go have a look!

***   Bernard Dove (Goldfur) -- Creator of the "Chakats" specie, and 'taur lover ultamato. Bernard's art is very sharp and clean with subtle, smooth color and painstaking ink detail. A true craftsman, and a great website! He also helped me get webspace for Backing Out. Thanks, Bernard!

***   Eamon K. Goya -- VERY spoogey, and sometimes a bit unsettling for my tastes, but some pics are very nice, and many are just fun! Lots of pin-ups, though I like his romantic and orgy pics best, especially those naughty dingoes and 'roos rooting by Ayers Rock! He's also quite prolific.

Randy Glasbergen -- One of the best and busiest commercial cartoonists out there. He draws "The Better Half" series, and has written tons of compilations. His cartooning books are the best I've seen, as they also review how to get started selling cartoons, instead of just how to draw them. A very funny guy!

Micheal Sato (Addison) -- Another raccoon fan who ranges from silly to macho, with a tad of uneasy weridness, all tied together with a headache-inducing web design!

Noel Melendez (Tincrash) -- Another raccoon fan! His odd, off-center style has that loveable quality I just can't resist. He also has something for fatwuffs and ice cream, somthing I can certainly agree with. :) Those stylized teeth freak me out, sometimes.

David DeSimone (Fox) -- Say what you will, but I think David's simple art is sheer brilliance. Lots of slice-o-life stuff, and hilarious antics between friends! No, you don't need anything else than that... so just take a look! He also has a thing for Foxcoons, and created the infamous Foxcoon sequence that everyone [should] know by now, which earnes him some points. :)

***   Michelle Gault -- A full spectrum of sheer silliness to magical brilliance, complimented by striking color. Also a sculptor, Michelle takes furrydom into the 3D world.

***   Terry Knight (Mayfurr) -- A funny bloke and the creator of YiffClass, the furry "mile high" club, so to speak. :) He has a thing for for huskies, especially the kinds in leather and harnessed to sleds! A bit of amusing macro art, too. Go see!
